My family enjoying a picnic under a willow tree. (summer 2013) |
For this week's assignment I am to imagine that I have a challenge that I currently do not have. I know I would have many challenges if I did not grow up in a family that supported and encouraged my education. If I did not think I could get into college or afford college my life would be a lot different, and would certainly not have the same job that I do now. Money may be a struggle. I would certainly depend on my family to help me financially.
It's good to think about the struggles that others face in our community. As educators, we work with all different types of families. It's important to research and understand supports that are available in the community to help people in need.
I agree with you I think that getting an education would be very hard had you not had support. I never thought about that until I met my fiancé who really had no support before me with finishing his education. Im so proud of him and I see how that effects his drive to finish.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post. I realized that like me you have the support of your family and friends. I honestly cannot image my life without my family. For my challenge, I selected being handicapped. The thought i must say is very scary.
I believe that the activities for this week have given us an opportunity to sit back and reflect on life from various points of view as well as to put ourselves in other people's situations. This, I am of the view makes us as educators more aware and empathic to the diversities which may exist in our classrooms.
Laura,
ReplyDeleteIsn't it true that money helps in many challenges. It is so important to use it as the tool that it is and not make it an idol. It can however, help those that are less fortunate or help us reach a goal or enjoy something that we value. It is something that if we lacked we would be challenged in many ways. Even looking for a job, without money, would be a challenge. Internet, clothing, transportation, paper, ink, .......the obstacles would be so vast. Empathy, as you said, is critical. These exercises are so important to make us better learners, more open listeners and more empathetic people. I also rely I God. I forgot to mention that as well. He is my true support, my rock, my compass. I feel remiss that I didn't start from the top down. Thank you for reminding me.
